Bergen Performing Arts Center

The BCIA has helped to revitalize one of Bergen Country's most important cultural assets. When the John Harms Center for the Arts reopens in downtown Englewood in the fall of 2004, the performance hall will stand as a monument to the BCIA's commitment to supporting arts and culture for the residents of Northern New Jersey.

The Harms Center, now renamed Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergen PAC) was collapsing under the burden of a high interest rate debt when it closed its doors in the spring of 2003. Determined to support the resurrection of the theater, the BCIA issued $1.9 million in bonds, which were backed by the County's AAA bond rating. The bonds will enable the theater to pay its debt and restart under new management.

Harms Hall is Northern New Jersey's largest theater and one of its finest. When it reopens with a full schedule of performances, the 1,400-seat Art Deco palace will offer a diverse range of programs to reflect the interests and ethnic diversity of New Jersey residents. Programs will feature film, jazz and classical music, theater and dance, comedy, children's shows, and even "A Circus on Ice." The center will bring education programming to area schools, and many of its programs will reach out to under-served and at-risk students.

The BCIA's rescue of Englewood's artistic treasure has ensured that Harms Hall will continue to be an important economic and cultural asset to Bergen County—as well as an arts attraction for all of New Jersey.
