Yeshiva Ktana School
The Bergen County Improvement Authority assisted the County of Passaic in the financing of the Yeshiva Ktana project, a school started in 1987 that has since expanded. The non-profit organization will expand its facilities to 72,000 square feet including 36 classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, and labs for computers and science experiments.
Since Passaic County did not operate an Improvement Authority at the time, state law allowed them to turn to another county. Bergen County was authorized to act as a conduit to assist in the financing of this project. While the Bergen County Improvement Authority had no risk in the venture, the county was able to collect a fee for the transaction.
The Passaic County Freeholders and Mayor of the City of Passaic endorsed the project heralding it as an important step in continuing to provide quality education in the region. Currently, enrollment is over 1,150 students from the area with an expected increase of almost ten percent during the next year.
Yeshiva Ktana also received $4.6 million through an earlier New Jersey Economic Development Authority Bond. The Yeshiva Ktana project demonstrates the ability of government entities to "think outside the box," working together to foster public-private partnerships for the betterment of communities.
