Overpeck Park
The BCIA has made it a priority to help restore precious parkland to Bergen
County. When the transformation of Overpeck Landfill is completed in 2009, the new
park will give Bergen County an oasis for residents to enjoy.
Overpeck Landfill sits on land that is shared by Ridgefield Park, Teaneck, Leonia,
Englewood, and Palisades Park. In the early 1950’s, the towns donated the acreage
to the County in exchange for a promise that it would become a public park to rival
the size and scope of New York City's Central Park. The plan never materialized.
Instead, only fragments of the land became park space. Bergen County turned most
of Overpeck's six hundred acres into landfill, and it remained a waste dump for
two decades. In 1974 the County was sued by Teaneck and Ridgefield Park, and placed
under court order to cap the landfill and convert it to a park. But the site was
never completely covered, and it sat abandoned.
The BCIA has stepped in to see that the 50-year-old dream becomes a reality. The
BCIA will ensure that the landfill will be sealed under layers of dredged harbor
and lake spoils, and other recycled material. The creek banks will be cleaned and
stabilized. When finished, the entire site will become a model for communities nationwide.
Its vast acreage will include baseball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis
courts, an amphitheater, a boat launch, picnic areas, jogging trails, roads and
parking areas, bike-riding and walking paths, a playground, and a wildlife refuge.
At the request of County Executive Dennis McNerney and the Bergen County Board of
Freeholders, the project will take place in phases, with the final portion expected
to meet the court-ordered deadline of 2009. Once the park is fully transformed,
an eyesore of neglected wetlands will become a green jewel in the heart of Bergen
County.
