The EPIC Project

SUPPORTING EDUCATION & EPIC

The EPIC ProjectThe BCIA has been working toward its mission of making state-of-the-art education programs a priority for Bergen County residents. In supplying funds to the Educational Partnership for Instructing Children (EPIC), the BCIA has ensured that persons with autism have access to quality educational services.

EPIC was founded in 1997 as a non-profit school offering highly individualized instruction for children with autism, a developmental disability that impairs social and communication skills. EPIC serves students ages 3 to 21, using teaching methods based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, regarded as the most effective approach to improving the lives of those with autism.

The BCIA helped EPIC achieve its goal of a new educational facility by issuing $2.5 million in tax-exempt bonds. With the funds, EPIC was able to retire previous mortgages and loans, and to purchase and renovate an existing building in Paramus. The renovation transformed the building into a first-rate facility, complete with classrooms, study space, and a fully equipped kitchen in which to teach pre-vocational work skills. The BCIA also put financing in place for the addition of an activity center.

With help from the BCIA, Bergen County has moved into the vanguard of education. The result is a dramatic improvement in the quality of life not only for children with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders, but for their families as well.
